really? dang,, this one is just like a chain saw, I think it would be pretty hard to break this one

I just got that kit, and man that saw can get to work if used right.

the one les stroud used was a cable saw, not chain

Yeah I saw that, but that was a wire saw…not exactly the same thing…. Those are notorious pieces of garbage, not even worth their weight (and they weigh very little)..

Actually correction, they might make a good snare wire…but thats about it.

we haven’t abused it, but so far we haven’t made a dent in them, so I’ll assume a LONG time

You can use a standard chainsaw chain, add some handles with the same result. No need to buy this “survival” branded stuff,

    February 17th, 2010 at 19:39 | #16

    @ HomoGnosticus

    Wrong..

You put a lot of thought into your reply eh??

Chainsaw blades cut ONE WAY.. these cut both ways, so its a usefull hand tool

    February 17th, 2010 at 19:56 | #17

How about using a file to sharpen the backside of the chainsaw blade. Not so difficult task.

    February 17th, 2010 at 22:18 | #18

    @ HomoGnosticus

OH.. so you are going to take something that exisits and then modify it for a new task.. Sort of like what they did

Only you want to ‘do-it-yourself’ while other people would rather have someone else do the modification and just sell the finished item..
Sort of like what they did

Yes exactly, if I can do something, at least partially, with my own hands, I don´t like purchasing it. But as you said that´s just my preference.

yeah..if it’s going in one directions….but when you hand cutting it’s going alternatively…

no you can not use a normal chainsaw chain, primarily because the mono-directional cut configuration. Second, because when you “bend” the chain blade side with a chainsaw blade, it will bind up on itself. Especially with smaller diameter woods.
When it comes to energy efficient wood cutting in a survival situation… nothing beats a razor sharp axe.
